On March 21, 2018 (until July 30, 2018), a major retrospective of the work of one of the pioneers of abstract art, Czech painter František Kupka (1871-1957) started at the Grand Palais in Paris.
This exhibition entitled "Kupka, Pioneer of Abstraction" focuses on presenting the life of the artist, his work, the approach by the painter of two major currents of the 19th and 20th century, having marked his own career: the symbolism and the abstraction.
300 works are exhibited along a half-chronological, half-thematic path on different media: paintings, newspapers, manuscripts, engravings, photographs, films, drawings.
Organized in partnership with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the National Gallery in Prague and the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki, this exhibition will be held in Prague from September 2018 and Helsinki from February 2019.

On March 19, 2018 (general sale), the French Post has put into circulation a very nice stamp devoted to František Kupka and one of his works "Plans par couleurs" (1910-1911, Centre Pompidou) in particular.
That stamp (€ 1.90, print run: 600,000) is present on the two First Day covers above and below, with cancellations from Paris (design: Claire Pelosato), dated March 16, 2018, including the signature of the painter. Thank you very much Joël and Roland!
Kupka is unfortunately not as well known to the French public as Braque, Picasso or Matisse despite such an important work.
Regarded as the "pioneer of abstraction" or the "magician of color", František Kupka moved to Paris from 1896, to live next, until his death in 1957 in Puteaux, a suburb of Paris. He founded there, with the Duchamp brothers, the famous "Group of Puteaux", a collective of artists and art critics linked to cubism.

This art retrospective thus aims to present to the French public the personality of Kupka in all his richness and complexity, his universe, his way of thinking, his interest in philosophy, ancient and oriental cultures, religions or science.
Czechoslovak and then Czech Post issued numerous stamps devoted to František Kupka in the past, especially this impressive souvenir sheet in 2012, reproducing a painting "Life's Pleasures" (or "Ballad of Epona") dating from 1901-1902, very different from the work reproduced on this French stamp.
František Kupka had already been in the spotlight in France in 2012, with his work "Music" (1936) being part of a booklet (12 stamps) entitled "Paintings of the twentieth century - Cubism".
